Tree Trimming & Pruning Cost on the North Shore (2026)

What tree trimming and pruning cost in 2026 across Chicago's North Shore: typical ranges by tree size, why crown work on a mature oak costs more, and what a fair quote covers.

Trimming is the work most homeowners put off, and it is also the work that quietly prevents the expensive call later. A limb hanging over the roof, a crown that has not been touched in fifteen years, deadwood you notice every time you pull in the driveway - all of it is routine pruning until a storm turns it into an emergency.

On the North Shore, tree trimming and pruning typically runs $300 to $1,400 per tree, with most mature-tree jobs landing in the $450 to $900 range. Here is what moves that number and what you should expect a written quote to spell out.

What trimming costs by tree size

Tree Typical range
Small ornamental (under 25 ft.) $200 - $400
Medium tree (25-50 ft.) $350 - $700
Large mature tree (50-75 ft.) $600 - $1,200
Very large oak or elm (75 ft.+) $1,000 - $1,800

Those are per-tree numbers for a crew already on site. If you have four or five trees that all need work, the per-tree price usually comes down, because the biggest fixed cost in any tree job is getting equipment and people to the property at all.

What actually drives the price

  • Height and reach. The difference between a 30-foot tree and a 70-foot tree is not just twice the work. It is a climber or a lift, rigging to lower limbs instead of dropping them, and far more time per cut.
  • How much is coming off. A light cleanup - deadwood, a few rubbing branches - is a fraction of a full crown reduction. Be specific about what you want, because "trim my tree" can mean a $300 job or a $1,200 job.
  • What is under the tree. A crown over open lawn is fast. A crown over a slate roof, a fence, a pool, or a neighbor's garage means every limb gets roped down piece by piece. This is the same reason access, not just size, drives removal pricing.
  • Species and condition. Brittle wood and heavy deadwood slow a climber down and change how the limbs have to come off. A declining tree is more careful work than a healthy one.
  • Cleanup and haul-off. Chipping and hauling brush is part of most quotes, but confirm it. "We'll leave the chips" versus "we'll haul everything" is a real price difference.

The kinds of pruning you may be quoting

Different crews use different words for the same work, which is how two quotes end up looking incomparable. The common categories:

  • Deadwooding (crown cleaning). Removing dead, broken, and diseased limbs. The cheapest and most valuable pruning most mature trees get, because dead limbs are what fall.
  • Crown thinning. Selectively removing interior branches to let light and wind through. Done right, it reduces storm load without changing the tree's shape.
  • Crown raising. Taking the lowest limbs off to clear a roof, a walk, a driveway, or sightlines.
  • Crown reduction. Shortening the overall height or spread with proper reduction cuts back to lateral branches. More labor, higher price, and the one most often done badly.
  • Clearance pruning. Pulling limbs back off the house, the garage, or a service line.

One term to refuse: topping. Cutting a tree's leaders off flat at a height is not pruning. It triggers weak regrowth, invites decay into every cut, and makes the tree more dangerous in five years, not less. Any quote that offers to "top" a healthy shade tree is a reason to call someone else.

When trimming is the answer and when it is not

Pruning earns its money when the tree is fundamentally sound and the problem is specific - limbs over the roof, deadwood in the crown, a branch rubbing the siding. It cannot fix a tree with a split trunk, major root damage, or structural decay. If you are not sure which situation you are in, that is a remove-or-save question, not a trimming question, and the honest answer sometimes costs you less than the pruning would have.

Trees with real structural problems that are still worth keeping sometimes have a third option: cabling and bracing to support a weak union rather than removing the tree outright.

Timing changes what you pay and what is safe

Most structural pruning on the North Shore is best done in the dormant season, roughly November through March. The crew can see the branch structure, the ground is firm, and the tree heals cleanly in spring. Dormant-season scheduling is also usually easier to book than the post-storm scramble.

Two timing rules that are not about price at all:

  • Oaks should not be pruned April through July. Fresh cuts in the growing season attract the beetles that spread oak wilt.
  • Elms follow the same logic for Dutch elm disease. Keep structural work in the dormant window.

What a fair trimming quote includes

Ask for all of this in writing before anyone climbs:

  • Which trees, identified clearly, and what is coming off each one in plain language
  • The pruning type - deadwood only, thinning, reduction, clearance - not just "trim"
  • Whether cleanup and haul-off are included or extra
  • Whether stump or storm debris already on the property is in scope
  • Proof of liability insurance and workers' compensation, which matters more on pruning than almost any other job, because the work happens directly over your house

Homeowners in Winnetka, Glenview, Northbrook, Wilmette, and Highland Park book dormant-season pruning every winter for exactly this reason: it is cheaper than the storm call, and the scheduling is calmer.

Before you compare quotes, it helps to know what the operations on them actually mean - tree trimming vs. pruning walks through cleaning, thinning, raising, and reduction, and why topping should be refused outright.
